We celebrated #MotherLanguageDay in Inishowen toda We celebrated #MotherLanguageDay in Inishowen today. ChangeMakers facilitator, Eve Li guided people to talk in pairs about their language. The atmosphere of warmth and connection achieved through speaking together. sharing songs and poems from different countries and sharing food was powerful. To hear a man from Buncrana say: My name is Rosemond and I’m from Ghana and to have people share each-other’s story as if it was their own said so much about our ability to listen to each-other and to connect with new people. Thank you to Eve Li, TheExchangeInishowen, Donegal Intercultural Platform and our Ukrainian colleague Inishowen Development Partnership for partnering.

International Mother Language Day recognizes that languages and multilingualism can advance inclusion, and the Sustainable Development Goals’ focus on leaving no one behind. Globally 40 per cent of the population does not have access to an education in a language they speak or understand.

A big message from the UN today is about promoting multilingual education based on mother tongue or first language. Thank you to Taslima Akhter from Bangladesh, a member of the Donegal Intercultural Platform, who explained that the idea to celebrate International Mother Language Day was an initiative of Bangladesh.
